Fernando Herrera is a Brazilian animation supervisor at Framestore. He studied Advertising at Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie and later trained in character animation at Animation Mentor. Herrera began his career in Brazil in the early 2000s, working as a CG generalist and animator across advertising, virtual production, and real-time animation. Early roles at studios such as Creatura 3D and BOO Digital involved modelling, rigging, and animation for commercials and institutional media. He transitioned into character animation for games and television, working on Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas (2011) and the Brazilian animated feature Lino (2017), on which he served as animation director. During this period, he also held supervisory and lead roles, helping define animation pipelines and styles on projects like Kauan e a Lenda das Águas (2010). After entering the international visual effects industry, Herrera worked with major vendors, MPC and Framestore, serving as a lead animator on Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019), X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019), and Dolittle (2020). At Framestore, he advanced to animation supervisor on His Dark Materials (2019), Lost in Space (2018), Slumberland (2022), and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023). His contributions to animated character performance in Slumberland (2022) also earned him a nomination for a Visual Effects Society Award for Outstanding Animated Character in a Photoreal Feature. His work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) earned him an Annie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Character Animation in a Live-Action Production, shared with colleagues Chris Hurtt, Nathan McConnel, Daniel Cabral, and Chris McGaw. In addition to his feature film work, Herrera served as a senior animator at Industrial Light & Magic, working on Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2023) and Transformers One (2024), followed by work at Wētā FX on Peacemaker (2022) Season 2 and Stranger Things (2016) Season 5. Alongside his studio career, Herrera has been active in animation education for over a decade. He co-founded BLUE School in Brazil, where he taught character animation, and later served as an instructor at AnimSchool. He is also the founder of Animation Den, an online training platform focused on creature animation, cinematics, and realism. In 2025, he returned to Framestore as an Animation Supervisor, working on Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026).
